I believe modern day miracles are happening today in the lives of the children we are ministering to by the power of God and your partnership. Three years ago, if someone would have told people how much Veronica would change and how beautiful she would become, they would have thought he or she was dreaming.
Today the changes that have taken place in Veronica′s life are a permanent reality, a reality built upon many miracles performed by God in the life of this special child. By God′s grace, expressed through the love and patient attention of a loving foster family, significant changes were made in only 1½ years. Today Veronica is as healthy and fully developed as any child her age could be.
Three years ago the story was vastly different. Three year old Veronica was only a bag of bones. She was so fragile that we were afraid to pick her up. Her developmental level was that of a 6 month old baby, not really aware of activities that happened all around her and not able to sit without being helped. Her speech was limited to moaning sounds.
Veronica′s was born in Jilava jail, the most horrible jail in Romania where her parents were detained because of a crime they committed. Her grandmother took her out and cared for her a few weeks before abandoning her at the Children′s Hospital.
In the beginning she was like any other child, but then her development stagnated and began to regress. She got sick often and gradually her condition worsened. She was not able to retain the food given her and as time went by, she grew in height alone, not in weight. Veronica was a living skeleton.
When Veronica turned four, her condition began to change. It was at that time PTJM intervened. We helped her eat, taught her to speak and brought her to gymnastic therapy classes which enabled her to develop different muscle groups. We began to pray for her recovery and healing. In a very short time she became a favorite of our staff.
On Christmas Day 2000, Veronica was able to take her first few steps. It was a miracle and gift to all of us that invested in her life. A few weeks later we placed Veronica in a foster family where she again became the center of our attention and love. In September 2001, Veronica was able to attend kindergarten for the first time. She was very happy with her classmates and integrated easily.
Veronica′s story is a vibrant testimony of God′s care and compassion for the abandoned children of Romania, and living proof of the transformation potential of the love of Christ when applied to a severely wounded body, soul, and spirit.
PTJM is ready and equipped to minister to the hundreds of other "Veronicas" who are languishing in Romanian institutions waiting for someone to help. I challenge you to consider becoming a partner with us in this life-giving ministry.
